Unstructured data is growing explosively in most organizations. File sizes are increasing, applications are becoming more graphics intensive, users generate loads of new content, and compliance requirements are becoming more and more stringent. In environments like these, containing the acquisition and operational costs for storage has become an uphill battle.
PowerFile’s Adaptive Data Reduction™ (ADR) software allows you to store more with less. It is designed specifically to compress raw, unstructured file data – making it perfectly suited for fixed content and archive data sets. Unlike resource-intensive deduplication products that only achieve attractive reduction rates on highly redundant backup data, ADR leverages adaptive compression algorithms that perform variable bit level intra-object deduplication to reduce the data footprint by up to 7x, allowing customers to further augment our industry-leading density and energy efficiency.
ADR incorporates many ground-breaking features which enhance performance and usability. Active CPU monitoring guarantees that data reduction will be performed with little or no impact to overall system performance, while in-line file analysis ensures that only the files that will yield significant space savings get compressed. The software is fully integrated with Touchless DR™ and data is compressed before replication to minimize traffic on the Wide Area Network (WAN). To enhance access performance, files stored in cache remain in their native format for quick and easy retrieval. When large files are requested, they are decompressed and served up to users and applications in smaller bits to minimize access latency.
ADR is an optional add-on to any of PowerFile’s storage appliances and can be enabled and configured directly from the browser-based management console. For maximum flexibility, administrators can turn ADR on and off for selected volumes. To guarantee the portability of compressed discs, a client-based decompression utility is also provided.
